It's Red Hot

It's been a while since I blogged, I got carried away with commissions (mainly animal portraits) and getting my artwork into premises where they can actually be seen – other than my website! So shout out to The Royal Oak Andoversford, and Dales Stores, who both are supporting local artists. I get very emo when I see my art hanging on their walls.
I always get asked why do I only paint horses? Well, not always, as you can see. This piece was inspired by a National Geographic cover I saw (sorry, no photographer was named). I wanted to give the feeling of a hot, dusty sunset as a backdrop to a slow paced big cat. As you know, I love colour and I love the opportunity to use dramatics reds. When I’m painting, it sometimes feels like playtime, especially when the reds come out.

Anyway, I thought I would show you this recent piece I’ve completed. I used my usual high pigment soft pastels from Unison and Sennelier. This time, however, instead of using the smooth surface of pastelmat, I used Sennelier La Carte Pastel surface which is more like sand-paper. It is great fun to use; I seem to do more mark making and find it less forgiving than pastelmat.
